Maine Lobsterman Dies After Falling Overboard

A Maine lobsterman died this month after falling off a boat near Jonesport. The lobster boat crewmembers contacted the U.S. Coast Guard, but the lobsterman was dead by the time they arrived in spite of CPR attempts. The lobsterman left a wife and a young son behind. Falling Overboard is a Leading Cause of Maritime Accidents According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were 210 reported fatal falls overboard in the U.S. between 2000 and 2014. None of the victims were wearing personal floatation devices. Approximately 53 percent of these deaths occurred when fall was unwitnessed by other crewmembers. That said, crewmembers should avoid working alone at all times. Falling overboard does not just entail falling into open sea. How Did This Tugboat Crewmember Lose His Life?

Last month, the friends and loved ones of a 33-year-old tugboat deckhand mourned for his passing after a tragic tugboat accident. They smiled sadly and spoke of how he could light up the room, but they all still wanted answers as to the circumstances of his death. On April 19th, a tugboat on the San Jacinto River in Houston, Texas capsized and the five crewmembers were stranded in the water. The Coast Guard’s rescue boats and helicopters responded to the scene and recovered four of the crewmembers. The other deckhand’s body was discovered a few hours later, down the river. According to the Coast Guard’s report, the San Jacinto River was at a higher flood level than normal at the time the tugboat capsized. However, the incident is still under investigation. Worker Loses His Life in New Jersey Tugboat Accident

Last week, an 84-foot-long tugboat crashed into a construction barge near the Tappan Zee Bridge in New York. The 13 crewmembers of the construction barge were not injured, but unfortunately, three of the crewmembers did not survive the tugboat accident. Three tugboats were pushing a separate barge across the Hudson River from Albany to New Jersey City when one of the tugs smashed into the construction barge. According to reports, the tug made communications saying it was too close and the whole operation needed to move to the left, but it was too late. The tugboat sank and three crewmembers lost their lives in the tugboat accident. One body of the crew was recovered following the tragedy.
