Dozens Rescued, 15 Injured After Hyannis Ferry Crash

The focus now is what caused the MV IYANOUGH with a master and crew with over 60 years of experience crash into a marked known jetty.  The United States Coast Guard will be performing an investigation which will consist of interviewing crew members, obtaining the course recording, electronic files and determining who was at helm, if anyone, at the time of the crash. Additionally, the Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard, Nantucket Steamship Authority and their insurance company will be investigating what occurred.  In this age with all the electronic navigation equipment and regulations regarding operation of the ferry, it is unclear how the MV IYANOUGH crashed into a known jetty. Common causes of ferry crashes are:

  •             Unmanned wheel house
  •             Autopilot on
  •             Inexperience of Master/Operator
  •             Inattention of Master/Operator
  •             Master error
  •             Lack of procedures/operations set forth by Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard,                       Nantucket Steamship Authority
  •             Failure to follow procedures/operations by the Master/Operator
  •             Malfunction/Failure of equipment

Steamship Authority has a duty to provide a safe environment for its passengers and to ensure their safety on the MV IYANOUGH.
