Latti & Anderson Celebrated Massachusetts Fishermen at the Working Waterfront Festival

The maritime law attorneys at Latti & Anderson LLP had a great time celebrating the tenth anniversary of the Massachusetts Working Waterfront Festival on September 28 and 29. We handed out over thousand coffee cups and mugs to attendees and scallop knives who stopped by our booth to say hello.

The Working Waterfront Festival has been a New Bedford tradition for ten years, celebrating the commercials fishing industry of the region and giving the community a chance to get to know all aspects of the industry. This year, the festival focused on how fishing has changed over the past ten years and reflected on the themes we have seen in past years. New Bedford is the largest fishing port in the U.S. and the fishing industry makes up a third of the city’s economy.

The festival included cooking demonstrations, plenty of food from vendors all over the area, a farmer’s market, model boat show, vessel tours and art activities for children. Latti & Anderson LLP sponsored a scallop shucking contest and a net mending contest, giving away cash prizes and scallop knives to winners in first through third place.

Latti & Anderson LLP wants to congratulate the following winners:

Net Mending:

1st place Steve Wright F/V Huntress

2nd place Meghan Lapp Reidar’s Manufacturing

3rd place Sara Fortin Reidar’s Manufacturing

 Scallop Shucking:

1st place Shane Dolman  F/V Westport

2nd place Sergey Chashchukhin Frontier Corp

3rd place Justin Lawrence F/V Sea Ranger & F/V Harvester

It was a great experience for all attendees to experience and what it is like mending a net or shucking a scallop and understanding both the skill and speed that is needed to complete the work.

We had a wonderful time getting to know our community and reaching out to local fishermen and people in the community. It was very enjoyable seeing clients we have represented over the years and meeting many individuals in the fishing industry.

We look forward to participating in the event next year.  In the meantime, if you have any question about maritime law, please don’t hesitate to contact our maritime law attorneys today.
