New Jersey Barge Worker Injured When Struck by Boom

A boom crane struck a New Jersey barge worker on January 21 on the Passaic River, causing serious injuries that required emergency rescue teams. According to the Lyndhurst Fire Department, when the worker’s injury was originally called in, it was described as just a “nosebleed.” However, when emergency crews arrived, they found the barge worker had severe head trauma and was “barely conscious.” Police believe he broke his nose and an arm.

The Lyndhurst Fire Department and Police Emergency Squad worked to get the 53-year-old worker onto a backboard and into a neck brace before transporting him to a hospital in Newark. Lyndhurst Fire Chief Paul Haggerty told the Cliffview Pilot, “It was such an unfortunate accident, the weather conditions didn’t help.”

At the time of the accident, a snowstorm had begun. Haggerty reported that the weather caused limited visibility. The worker was on a barge stationed on the Passaic River, working to remove sediment from the river.

Barge accidents are usually preventable, by following proper safety precautions and adhering to safety regulations. When barge workers are injured, this may lead to claims of negligence and unseaworthiness. Wrongful deaths and injuries are often prevented on barges with safety training, adequate staffing and proper maintenance. If you have been injured while working on a barge, you may be able to seek damages for pain and suffering, lost wages, medical bills, mental anguish and other damages.
