Join Us This Weekend at the Working Waterfront Festival!

Our firm is excited to be taking part in the 10th Annual Working Waterfront Festival, which will run from Saturday, September 27 (11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.) through Sunday, September 28 (11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.) on the Port of New Bedford’s Steamship Pier.

(Admission to the festival is free, and free parking for the festival will be available at the Elm Street Garage.)

The festival will feature several events, including a chance to:

  • Explore the decks of a scalloper
  • Enjoy fresh seafood
  • Attend fishermen’s contests
  • See cooking demonstrations
  • Experience the inner workings of the fishing industry

During the festival, be sure to visit our booth, where we will be giving away free coffee mugs and scallop knives to scallopers, as well as answering any questions you might have about maritime law.

In addition to our booth, our firm will be sponsoring two fishermen’s contests at the festival, which both include cash prizes!

First, on Saturday at noon, we will sponsor the Net Mending Contest (sign up begins at 11:00 a.m. at the contest stage), where fishermen compete against each other mending a net, allowing festivalgoers to learn how it’s done. Then, on Sunday at noon, our firm is sponsoring a Scallop Shucking Contest (sign up begins at 11:00 a.m. at the contest stage). The prizes for each contest are:

  • First Place: $500
  • Second Place: $250
  • Third Place: $100

(The Scallop Shucking Contest includes an additional prize of one dozen shucking knives.)

Prior to Saturday and Sunday’s events, the Working Waterfront Festival will present a “Festival Sampler” at 7:30 this evening at Seamen’s Bethel, which is located at 15 Johnny Cake Hill. The Festival Sampler will feature storytelling, traditional music and fisherpoetry performed by:

  • The Beans with Dan Lanier
  • Bob Quinn
  • Bridget Fitzgerald
  • Dano Quinn
  • Dave Densmore
  • Jon Campbell
  • Matthew Byrne
  • Rob Seitz

Proceeds from the ticket sales will benefit the festival as well as several year-round educational programs.
