One Killed in Mississippi Fishing Accident

Mark Barhanovich, 54, died in a boating accident near his home in Biloxi, Mississippi, according to the SunHerald.com. Barhanovich was out on a 23-foot fishing boat when he accidently struck a submerged object in the Mississippi Sound. Following the collision, the motor ripped off the stern and flew into the boat, striking Barhanovich in the back. Barhanovich was in the boat with one friend, and another fisherman friend was in a separate boat. They brought him ashore, where he was rushed to Ocean Springs Hospital by ambulance.

The men were fishing for trout off the eastern end of Deer Island. The DMR Marine Patrol is still looking into the accident. The collision occurred around 6:30 a.m., and it is undetermined how fast the boat may have been traveling at the time.

“This is an absolute, total shock,” said Frank Barhanovich, the victim’s brother. “I’m 70 years old and never would have dreamed I would be burying my little brother. I’m going to miss him, too.”
