Barge Breaks Free From New York Construction Site

According to The Journal News, on March 30, a barge broke free from the Tappan Zee Bridge construction site for the third time since September. A statement released by Tappan Zee Constructors (TZC) confirmed that the barge had come loose from its mooring and drifted for about an hour before it was recovered.

Safety concerns about the construction site were first raised back in July when the best man and bride-to-be of a wedding party died in a recreational boating accident involving a barge anchored below the Tappan Zee Bridge.

“The Thruway Authority is currently reviewing TZC’s safety protocols and barge mooring methods,” Brian Conybeare, special advisor to Governor Andrew Cuomo, said in a statement. “The contractor has been directed to install GPS tracking on its barges, boats and other vessels as soon as possible as part of a comprehensive series of safety enhancements on and around this major construction site.”

I Need a Barge Accident Lawyer to Help Me

If not properly maintained and operated, barges can pose serious dangers to both those who work on them and boaters who share the water with them. All it takes is a barge owner/operator failing to maintain safe equipment or a fellow crewmember failing to follow proper procedures for something such as setting out and securing towlines for you or a loved one to suffer a severe injury.

At Latti & Anderson LLP, we understand the challenges people face after they or someone they love has been the victim of a barge accident.
