Nationwide Maritime Trial Lawyer: Barge Accident Kills One on Sacramento River

A worker was killed when a tractor he was operating on fell off a barge and into the Sacramento River on November 25. The man was operating an excavator when the tractor he was riding on slipped into the water and drowned the worker.

According to the Solano County Sheriff’s office, it was initially reported as an industrial accident and the Coast Guard and Drowning Accident Recovery Team based in Sacramento responded. It took divers three hours to access the cab of the tractor where the worker was, due to the fact that the cab had fallen sideways into the water. It was also 15 feet underwater and buried in 3 feet of silt.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Barge workers are often exposed to various dangers on the job when operators or other crewmembers are negligent. Some barge hazards include:

  • Weak lines that tear and split
  • Improperly lead tow lines
  • Fatigues due to long hours, adverse weather and inadequate staffing
  • Leaks or moving barge cargo
  • Collisions with other vessels in the water
  • Handling heavy lines
  • Lack of safety procedures or equipment

If you have been injured working on board a barge or have a loved one that was killed while working offshore, you may be entitled to compensation.
