Westhampton Beach Boy Scout Protecting Boaters with Eagle Project
A 14-year-old Boy Scout in Westhampton Beach, New York is working to bring a life jacket loaner station to the Westhampton Beach Village Marina. According to the Westhampton-Hampton Bays Patch, the life jacket stand is a part of the young man’s quest to earn his Eagle Scout award, which is the highest rank in Boy Scouting. As a part of earning the award, a Scout must create and complete a community service project.

Once up and running, the loaner station will allow boaters to borrow life jackets on an honor system during the boating season. Sea Tow International, which created similar stands in 2013 at other marinas in the area, is donating all of the life jackets for the project.
In addition, to fund the construction of the loaner station, the teen will be hosting a boater safety course open to anyone 10 years old and older for a $30 donation. The course will be held in two sessions at Village Hall on February 25 and 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. If participants attend both sessions, they will meet the requirements for New York State boater certification.
“This project is important to me because I want boaters to stay safe on the water,” said the Boy Scout. “A few years ago, there was a boating accident and three kids drowned. The Boy Scout Motto is “Be Prepared”. If you’re not wearing a life jacket when you’re on a boat, then you’re not prepared.”
