University Student Pleads Guilty to Drunken Boating

A Colorado State University student has pleaded guilty to drunken boating after severely injuring a man at Horsetooth Reservoir last summer. The 22-year-old student took a plea agreement on October 8, had a vehicular assault charge dismissed and will be receiving probation.

The student ran over another man on June 30 when he reversed the boat over him, causing deep lacerations and breaking the hip and foot of the victim.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, about a third of all boating fatalities are caused by drunken boating, making it the leading contributing factor in boating accidents in the U.S. When a loved one is killed or injured in a drunken boating accident, families and victims can suffer emotional, physical and financial trauma. It is important to have a competent and expert lawyer by your side when a negligent boater has injured you. An experienced attorney will investigate the accident alongside the Coast Guard and insurance companies to ensure full compensation is awarded to the victim.

The most important thing to do if you are involved in a drunken boating accident is to not speak to anyone before hiring an experienced maritime attorney. A maritime trial lawyer can help you maximize damages and implement the correct strategies to help you recover your losses after a tragic boating accident.

Alcohol was a factor in 17 percent of all boating accident-related deaths in the U.S. in 2012, according to the U.S. Coast Guard. Over 100 people died in the U.S. in 2012 due to drunken boating.
