How Can I Safely Water Ski?

As the summer continues and Labor Day arrives in a few weeks, more people will be out on the water participating in recreational boating activities like water skiing.

If you are a water skier or boat operator, make sure you take safety precautions. Water skiing accidents can be deadly or lead to catastrophic injuries like broken bones, spinal cord injuries or brain injuries. Use caution, and make sure you follow all the regulations for the waterway you are operating.

Recently, HealthDay News had an interesting report about water skiing. According to the news outlet, each year, thousands of people are hurt in skiing and wake boarding accidents. To reduce your chances for an injury accident, the news outlet reported that you should:

  • Learn how to get out of the water and use a towrope safely
  • Review basic hand signals with spotters (you should always have a spotter or a person who is not operating the boat act as a lookout)
  • Make sure your boat operator is licensed
  • Always wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket
  • Never use alcohol or drugs when operating a boat
  • Make sure the propeller of the boat is turned off before you approach it from the water
  • Make sure weather conditions are ideal

Teen Dies in Ohio Water Skiing Accident

We bring up this subject because recently an Australian girl who was visiting Ohio for a church camp was killed in a water skiing incident. According to WCMH-TV, the accident occurred in Delaware County, on Alum Creek Lake.

The girl reportedly fell off her skis and was struck by another boat. The accident remains under investigation. Witnesses said that the waterway where the incident occurred is often very congested. Some people said that there are many people who rent vessels or jet skis, who do not always follow safety guidelines or who are inexperienced.
